Alec Poole is an Irish British Touring Car Championship driver, who won the 1969 edition of the championship in his debut year.

Background[]

Poole's career began in the mid-60s, as he entered club events in the British Isles. From this he moved to the European Touring Car Championship, taking part in Division Two for the 1968 season.[1] That year also saw him compete alongside Paddy Hopkirk in the London to Sydney rally, as well as taking on the infamous 24 Hours of Le Mans.[2]

BTCC History[]

For 1969, Poole bought a Mini Cooper S 970, which would be run under the Equipe Arden banner for the season.[3] After taking five victories from five in Class A, Poole started to be overcome in class, losing out to Laurie Hickman in several races.[3] He returned to the top in Class A in two of the final three meetings, taking the title a round early with victory at Brands Hatch, opting to miss the final race of the season.[3]

Poole moved on to new horizons at the end of the year, as he entered a variety of Endurance races and sports car competions throughout the 1970s.[2]
