Jacob Robert "Bob" Olthoff was a former British Saloon Car Championship driver, known for being one of the closest drivers to Jim Clark during his championship winning year. Although Olthoff never won the title, the BSCC would see the South African race for two years.

BackgroundEdit

Olthoff's racing career began in 1957, making waves in South Africa.[1] From this, Olthoff built a career on an international scale, entering various European championships and endurance races, entering the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring for several years before he entered the BSCC.[2]

BTCC HistoryEdit

Olthoff made his debut in 1963, running for John Willment Automobiles in a Ford Cortina GT.[3] Olthoff's drive was given to him to try and take points away from team mate Jack Sears' rivals in the championship, who were running in the lower classes. Olthoff succeeded in his task, taking two class wins and a third (as well as a Class D win in Sears' Galaxie).[3]

In 1964, Olthoff ran for John Willment once more, although he was powerless to stop Jim Clark's march to the championship.[4] However, Olthoff proved to be the closest contender to Clark in Class B, finishing second in three of the years races, the best of anyone in the class.[4] Fifth place in the final standings prompted Olthoff to move on from Touring Cars (having also competed in the European Touring Car Championship that year), returning to sports cars and his goal of entering Formula One.[4]
