Robinson's first venture into top level motorsport was the BSCC, although he had competed in club events before that point.
Robinson began his career with A.G. Dean Racing Ltd. at the age of nineteen, using one of Tony Dean's Lotus Cortinas. The pair then bought the Team Lotus cars when they pulled out of the championship, with Robinson taking his first victory in only his second race, claiming the honours in Class C. After an impressive pair of debut races, Robinson competed in the championship for a full season in 1968.
Robinson impressed in his first full season, although his older Cortina could not compete with Frank Gardner's new Escort, as Robinson finished second to the Australian at seven of the year's eleven races. Along with two third places, Robinson claimed 50 points in total, giving him third in the championship and second in Class C. He would start the following season with A.G. Dean, although he moved to pastures new at the third round.
Robinson moved to Byker Hill Garage Ltd. at the third round of 1969, now equipped with a Ford Escort TC. Three third place finishes accompanied three seconds, giving 34 points to the young driver. Robinson moved onto international motorsport, only appearing once more in the BSCC, at a rare televised race in 1986, although he failed to finish.
