Daniel Welch is a BTCC driver, currently competing in the 2014 season for his father's team, Welch Motorsport.[1] Welch made his debut in 2011, and is one of the only drivers in BTCC history to have used a Proton.[1]
Current Season[]
Welch is set to compete in the BTCC for a fourth successive season.[1] One again driving for his father's team (running under the name STP Racing with Sopp & Sopp), Welch will be using a Proton Persona, alongside another car prepared for Ollie Jackson.[2] Although the season started on the 30th of March at Brands Hatch, Welch is yet to compete in the season, having had to withdraw from the opening weekend.[3]
Background[]
Welch, the son of John Welch (former British Rallycross driver), began his career in Formula Vauxhall in 2000.[1][3] Welch stepped up to Formula Renault the following season, although Welch would never compete in a full season.[3] In 2007, Welch switched to the SEAT Cupra Cup for two years, before driving in the SEAT Leon Eurocup in 2009 alongside competing in the Ginetta G50 Cup.[3]
BTCC History[]
His father had previously set up a team to support Welch in his career. In 2011, the Welch family decided to enter the BTCC, although delays meant that they could only enter their new Proton Gen-2 in time for the sixth round at Snetterton[3]. A single point was the result of their endevours into a new series.[3]
