John Sprinzel is a former British Touring Car Championship driver, born on the 30th of October 1930.[1] Sprinzel competed in the first ever running of the BTCC in 1958, finishing third overall.[2]
Background[]
Sprinzel first entered motorsport in 1955, when he finished sixth in class at the RAC Rally in his mother's Austin A30.[3] He continued to enter rallies, ultimately using an Austin A35, the car he would also use in the 1958 BTCC season.[3] Sprinzel also made a name for himself driving Frogeye Sprites, as well as establishing his own team: Team Speedwell.[3]
BTCC History[]
Sprinzel decided to dabble in the newly formed British Saloon Car Championship in 1958, entering his Austin A35 under his own stable, Team Speedwell.[3] Sprinzel proved to be competitive, taking his class with ease and finishing a single point behind Jack Sears and Tommy Sopwith in their more powerful cars.[4] Sprinzel took six class victories that year.[4]
In 1959, Sprinzel led the calls for races to be restructured, as different race formats were used each week.[4] This led to the BSCC adopting Appendix J of the FIA rulebook for their official regulations.[4] For Sprinzel, however, the new season proved fruitless, with no further class wins to add to his name.[4] Ultimately, at the end of 1959, Sprinzel left both the BSCC and Team Speedwell, instead focusing on endurance racing and rallying.[1]
