Les Leston (born as Alfred Lazarus Fingleston in 1920) was a former British Touring Car Championship driver and jazz musician.[1] Although Leston is better known for his racing career outside the BTCC, he did make an impact on the series, taking the Class B title in 1959.
Background[]
Leston's motorsport career began when he bought a Jaguar SS100, before he obtained a drive in an official Cooper team in Formula Three.[2] This enabled Leston to win the 1954 championship and paved his way to entering three official Formula One races between 1956 and 1957.[2]
BTCC History[]
Leston decided to enter the first season of the British Saloon Car Championship in 1958, joining the field in his Riley 1.5 at the year's meeting at Mallory Park. Leston showed his strength, taking victory in Class B. This feat would be repeated at the final two rounds of the season, as Leston won two more races and decided to run in the BSCC full time the following year.
Four class wins, with a further podium saw Leston claim the Class B title in 1959. He was also a contender for the overall drivers title, until two retirements in the final three races of the season ended his hopes. From this, Leston's racing career ground to a halt, as the former Formula One driver only entered three more races in 1960 and 1961, adding a further victory to his tally.
