Roy Pierpoint is a former British Saloon Car Championship champion and class winner, having won the championship in his debut year of 1965.[1] Pierpoint spent six years in the BTCC, competing from 1965 until 1971.[2]

Background[]

Pierpoint's career began at the age of twenty, when he entered a self built Fiat 1100 in a race at a BARC meeting.[2] Although his name dissappeared from entry lists after this, Pierpoint would re-emerge in 1962, entering numerous events organised by the BRDC.[2] He continued to enter the Brands Six Hour race after 1962, as well as hill climbs.[2]

BTCC History[]

Pierpoint's first chance to enter the BSCC came in 1965, when the Weybridge Engineering Company were looking for a driver for their Ford Mustang, built by Alan Mann Racing.[3] Their choice in Pierpoint proved to be ideal, as Pierpoint took the bright red machine to six wins that season, meaning he scored maximum points and took the title (despite being tied on points with Warwick Banks, although Pierpoint's dropped scores and the fact that he won races overall saw Pierpoint take the title).[3]

Pierpoint swapped the Mustang for a racing version of the Ford Falcon (named the Ford Falcon Sprint) for 1966.[4] His season was marked, however, by numerous retirements, which were caused (it would appear) by the supercharger which his car was fitted with.[4] Three further seasons with the Falcon saw Pierpoint finish fifth in the championship (his highest finish apart from his championship year), taking six further wins.

The final year of his Falcon days saw Pierpoint switch to Bill Shaw Racing.[5] While racing for Bill Shaw, Pierpoint was given a Chevrolet Camaro to race with half way through the season, claiming his first victory in the car at Silverstone.[6] Pierpoint had been in contention to win the title that year, but the change of car meant that the two further wins he obtained that season were not added to his points tally.[7]

1970 and 1971 saw Pierpoint's interest in the championship wain, with two further podiums and a further points finish over the two years.[6] Tasked with breaking in the new Chevrolet Camaro Z28, Pierpoint's final years in the championship were plagued by retirements.[6] Pierpoint ended his BSCC career with a fourth place finish at the second round of 1971.[8]
